Indore : A Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) train is likely to roll out from the city railway station to nearby cities soon. Railways Minister of State Manoj Sinha gave the assurance to MP and Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan in New Delhi on Tuesday.
The MEMU will cater to cities like Ujjain, Bhopal, Dewas, Nagda and Maksi. Sources said that during the meeting, Mahajan had asked Sinha for starting of MEMU train from Indore-Ujjain-Nagda, Indore-Bhopal and Indore-Dewas-Maksi.
MEMU is a commuter rail operated for connecting semi-urban and rural areas. The MEMU operates on Alternating Current (AC) drawn from Over Head Cable. The first MEMU service was started in India in Bilaspur division of S E Railway on October 17, 1995.
Mahajan also asked Sinha to increase the run of Indore-Pune-Indore for all the seven days. Presently train has frequency on 5 days only.
Similarly, she also asked him to increase the frequency of Indore-Patna-Indore. The Lok Sabha Speaker also sought regularization of the summer special train Indore-Kochuvelli. It may be recalled that there is persistent demand from the Keralites for the same.
Though the duration of the summer special train ended on June 6, due to the high pressure of the passengers, the run-up of the summer special train has been extended till the end of the month. Mahajan also asked Sinha to fill the long vacant post of General Manager of Western Railway. The MoS assured her to take in to the consideration her requests.
