Indore: As temperature increases, the weather becomes favourable for insects, mosquitoes to breed. However, this increasing temperature is not favourable for most pet dogs and cats. With the increasing temperature, infection leads to illness and at times is life-threatening for puppies. City’s veterinarians said pet owners should know the effects of rising temperature.

UNDERSTAND CHANGES AND ACT ACCORDINGLY

1. Hair fall: Dogs grow and shed their coats to match weather conditions. They begin to shed their heavy winter coat so that they can stay cool in summer. Again, they shed in the autumn and grow a much thicker, plusher winter coat. This effect is noticeable in breeds with thick coats like Siberian husky.

TIP: The old coat must still be removed by grooming the dogs. Basic brushing is important for dogs and cats.  T B During early summer, dogs breed more. This is because conceiving in early summer will deliver babies in summer when the temperature is warmer and food is plenty. This makes it easier for parent dogs to find food. Most fertile bitches will go through a heat cycle in early summer.

TIP: Check your pet, if they are cranky or heated, check with your vet for advice and medicine. Some breeds might become lethargic while some become very active during warmer weather. Some pets might even become irritated in cycle of adapting to the changing temperature.

TIP: If lethargy and irritation is temporary, then you can use mood pleasers like toys or favourite food. However, if the mood continues to stay sour, then visit a veterinarian.

With the change in climate, viral infection is common as many hemorrhagic gastroenteritis cases are reported these days. Pups are most susceptible as they have a high mortality rate.

TIP: Keep checking for infections and provide them a good balanced diet. If your pup shows sign of smelly diarrhoea or vomiting contact your vet immediately.

CHECK INFECTIONS CHECK FOR FLEAS One of the best seasons for fleas is spring, as they grow quickly. The first sign that your pet might have fleas is excessive scratching, biting or licking at the skin. The best places to look for fleas on your pet are around their stomach, lower back and base of the tail.

When checking your pet’s coat, look for:  D This looks like small black specks of grit, similar to finely ground pepper. This is actually digested dried blood.  Approximately the size of a pin head, fleas can be seen moving or jumping through your pet’s coat.

ALLERGIES Like many human beings, pets can suffer from allergies during spring as pollens are flying in the air. Some animals may experience sneezing, sniffling and watery eyes, but this is not usually severe and is easily managed. Seasonal allergies in pets are more likely to appear in the form of skin irritation on their feet and hairless area of abdomen.

However, if there is excessive scratching, irritation or redness, then it requires ointments and medical treatment.

TICKS Ticks are too tiny to make them hard to detect. If you’ve been outside with your pet, then always check for ticks and remove before it causes damage.

Ticks are usually found around your dog’s head, ears, neck, chest and front legs. Ticks pose health risks like blood loss, anemia and skin irritation or infection. Ticks can also transmit diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis or tick paralysis
