Indore: Something fishy killing fish

Indore: There is something fishy about this pond near Bijasan Temple where around 128 fish fooated to the surface lifeless on Monday. An investigation has been ordered to ascertain the reason. The shifting of water for the deepening of pond is suspected to be the main reason for the deaths.

It is also suspected that some chemical was dumped into the pond which may have contaminated the water. A tender of Rs 1 crore 28 lakh was sanctioned last year for rejuvenation and deepening of the pond. The water was shifted during the deepening work conducted by Indore Municipal Corporation and this reduced the amount of available water for the fish.

Indore Municipal Corporation water works in-charge Balram Verma said, “A probe has been launched. We fear that certain chemical was dumped in the pond. We have sent samples of the water and dead fish for investigation.” He added that last year also fish was shifted to Sirpur Lake. This year of the three puddles in the pond, 500 fish from two puddles were shifted while some (fish) from the third puddle “awaited” their shift. About 128 fish which died in the third puddle are being tested for the presence of any chemical.
