Indore: In a major setback to Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV), the state government on Thursday directed the university not to release names of candidates selected on contract basis for teaching posts till a complaint regarding irregularities is resolved.

“A complaint regarding irregularities has been filed. Till the complaint is addressed, don’t release list of appointed candidates,” said a order issued by Department of Higher Education.

DAVV had started process to fill regular posts of professors and readers with assistant professors on contract basis. Education watchdog and advocate Nimish Pathak and NSUI had protested the move.

“DAVV started interviews for appointment of contractual teachers from Wednesday but the process is in gross violation of norms,” said advocate Pathak.

He said total sanctioned posts for assistant professors at UTD are 221 of which 136 are filled. “Only 85 posts are lying vacant in university teaching departments but the university invited applications for 213 posts of assistant professors stating that they will be filled on contract basis,” Pathak said.

He claimed that university was filling posts of professors and readers also. “DAVV is committing a major scam if it filled posts sanctioned for professors and readers with assistant professors on contract basis,” Pathak said.

DAVV faculty Prof VB Gupta defended the move saying that they are filling posts sanctioned for professors and readers with contractual assistant professors as the university does not want to spend much on “temporary appointments”.

“The scale for contractual professor is Rs 60,000, contractual reader is Rs 50,000 and contractual assistant professor is Rs 35,000. We don’t want to spend much on contractual teachers so opted to fill all vacancies with only contractual assistant professors,” Gupta said.

Pathak stated it would be in violation of norms as contractual assistant professors can’t be appointed against sanctioned posts of professors and readers.
