When we understand the customer problem and think of multiple ideas to improve the problem, it can help us to arrive on newer and innovative solutions- this is called the design approach. It helps to innovate. Said corporate trainer Dr. Purva Dharkar here addressing a session on the ‘Creativity and design thinking for entrepreneurship development at Board Room of IMA on Monday. The session was organised by Indore Management Association (IMA). Dr. Dharkar is President at the Association of Women in Science chapter.

Dr. Poorva started the session by stating that the term Design thinking was coined by Tim Brown- Design thinking as an approach has been slowly evolving since the 1960’s. Over the past fifty plus years, design thinking (or design really, let’s be honest has appropriated many of the best tools and techniques from creative fields, social and computer sciences. In 60’s America, professions like industrial design and product design made their first small steps to distance themselves from engineering and the sciences.
What is Design thinking
Design Thinking is often referred to as ‘outside the box’ thinking, as designers are attempting to develop new ways of thinking that are different from the more common problem-solving methods. It’s also known as a creative-problem solving approach where designers use to create new values that are different and create positive impact. Design thinking is applied to business by making creativity logical, the results are tremendous. Design Thinking is already used by major organizations to help them with their decision-making process. Design Thinking is a relatively new practice in the business world, and there a few different ways to describe it.
It is a ‘problem-solving protocol that helps your business to achieve big results by focusing on the solution or it is a ‘core strategy that creates an organizational culture focused on solving problems for the end user. Design Thinking is a factor that can impact the greater good and change life for the better. It enables to meet customers’-clients’ needs more effectively. It also helps in lowering production or service providers’ costs.
