Indore: MGM hopes to get 49 PG degree seats by giving up PG diploma berths

Indore: As many as 49 post graduate diploma seats of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College may be converted into PG Degree seats for the academic session 2019-20 as the college as applied for the same with the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The college administration has crossed its fingers to get approval of PG degree seats as the ministry will look after student-teachers ratio before giving nod and the college believes to have appropriate number of PG teachers. As per the Medical Council of India’s amendment notification dated July 12, 2018 enabling medical colleges to seek equal number of PG (MD/MS) seats by surrendering recognized diploma seats in corresponding courses.

The ministry is receiving applications from medical colleges for increasing PG degree seats which are being processed on priority. After receipt of application, the ministry is required to issue a notification omitting the name of diploma in respect of the said medical college and forward the application along with omission notification and undertaking of the college to the Board of Governors-Medical Council of India (BoG-MCI) for recommendation.

The final letter of permission would be issued by February 28. According to Dean of MGM Medical College Dr Jyoti Bindal, “We have applied for surrendering all PG diploma seats to get PG degree seats. We hope to get the approval for all seats as we have appropriate number of pg teachers of all subjects.”

The college has applied for surrendering PG seats in Chest and TB, Pathology, Paediatrics, ENT, Radio Diagnoses, Anaesthesia, Ophthalmology and Radio Therapy. According to college’s spokesperson Dr Rahul Rokade, “After getting approval of PG seats, we will have 157 PG degree seats then as we are having 108 PG degrees seats at present.”
