Indore: Man caught for fraud attempt is Nigerian

Annapurna police station in charge Satish Kumar Dwiwedi said accused named Benedith Van was arrested on complaint of Subhash Lamba of Indira Gandhi Nagar.

Indore: The foreigner, who was arrested while attempting to dupe a businessman in Annapurna area, is from Nigeria. Earlier, he was believed to be from South Africa as a passport of the same country was recovered from him.

Annapurna police station incharge Satish Kumar Dwiwedi said accused named Benedith Van was arrested on complaint of Subhash Lamba of Indira Gandhi Nagar. Police came to know that he has passport of South Africa so that it was believed that he is from South Africa.

During questioning, it was revealed that Benedith is a Nigerian and lived in New Delhi. The police are checking his visa details also. It is believed that he had contacted Lamba posing as Maria and was trying to dupe him after showing fake currency in dollars. A police team will sent to Delhi with accused to know his past record.

According to Dwiwedi, Lamba in his complaint said he was contacted by a girl named Maria on social media. Later, they became friends and started chatting. Subhash was informed by Maria that she has sent an agent to give him money after which he can become a rich man.

On Tuesday, Lamba was contacted by accused Benedith who informed that he came to city to give him 1 lakh dollar. He met Lamba and showed counterfeit currency notes and said notes need to be cleaned using a chemical. Benedith later asked to give him Rs 25,000 for cleaning of notes. Lamba and his son informed police after Benedith demanded money.
