Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee has made Indore Lok Sabha seat as its prestige point as the party is struggling to win the seat since 1989. All the senior party leaders seem to be discussing about the Indore seat and the ways to penetrate the BJP bastion represented by Lok Sabha Speaker and MP Sumitra Mahajan.
However, Congress party leaders are divided over the choice of candidates from Indore. Recently, PWD minister Sajjan Singh Verma had said that party had not taken Indore seat seriously. Meanwhile, Sumitra Mahajan too challenged the Opposition by claiming that she didn’t find any eligible candidate in Congress to handover the “keys” of Indore. In an effort to contest election from Indore, many Congress leaders have been demanding to field Bollywood actor Salman Khan or Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi from Indore.
The Congress party contacted Salman Khan to become the state’s brand ambassador and now, Congress leaders are requesting Salman Khan to campaign in favour of their party.
The ‘key’ to Malwa
Recently, Congress leader and minister of sports and youth welfare Jitu Patwari had said that Congressmen will “snatch” the “key of Indore” from Mahajan. “Mahajan had taken the key from PC Sethi. Now, she should hand over the key to us. We are her kids and we will snatch the key from her,” Patwari had said few days back. Indore seat is considered as the most important seat of Malwa and Nimar region, which decides the future of any party in Indore division.
Congress failing since 1989
Sumitra Mahajan had succeeded senior Congress leader late Prakash Chandra Sethi in 1989 and after that she is winning continuously from Indore seat. PC Sethi was Member of Parliament from Indore between 1980 and 1989. Sethi had succeeded Kalyan Jain of Bhartiya Lok Dal in 1977.
