Keeping in view the increase in number of cases of sudden cardiac arrest, Madhya Pradesh Medical Science University, Jabalpur, plans to make it mandatory for all students and faculty members to learn cardiopulmonary cerebral resuscitation. The university has directed some of the colleges to start its training.

University vice chancellor Dr RS Sharma said giving cardiopulmonary cerebral resuscitation on right time can save one’s life. Dr Sharma said learning it will be compulsory for all students and faculty members in the colleges associated with the university. More than 15,000 students of medical, nursing, pharmacy and paramedical courses will learn the technique and teach others.

“It is better that more people learn it so that they can use it in the time of emergency for saving life. We are guiding colleges for taking the initiative on their own and will make it compulsory if not followed by them,” Dr Sharma said. On directives of Governor Anandiben Patel, the university recently conducted a survey over the health of girls studying in colleges in the state and found that 16.6 per cent of them were anaemic.

“After receiving the report, we asked colleges to inform girls that they are anaemic and should take necessary diet. We will ask colleges about the follow up report,” Dr Sharma said.

What is it?
Cardiopulmonary cerebral resuscitation (CPR) is an emergency procedure that combines chest compressions with artificial ventilation in an effort to manually preserve brain function until further measures are taken to restore spontaneous blood circulation and breathing in a person who gets cardiac arrest. It is recommended in those who are unresponsive with no breathing or abnormal breathing, for example, agonal respirations.

This is how it works.
