Indore: National BJP general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya, who has been saying that he is tied up in West Bengal but would still contest Lok Sabha election from Indore if party directed, on Wednesday took a U-turn and said he won’t contest election. “People of Indore, activists and well wishers of the country want me to contest the elections. But we all need to make Narendra Modi the Prime Minister for making India prosperous and rich,” Vijayvargiya tweeted. “The people of West Bengal are with Modi. I have to live in Bengal, so I have decided not to contest the elections.”

He stated that for BJP nation comes first, party second and self third.  Vijayvargiya is considered to be front runner for Indore seat after outgoing Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan announced that she won’t be contesting LS elections following a statement by national BJP president Amit Shah that party won’t field candidates above 75 years.  After Mahajan opted out many names had started doing the rounds, including that of Indore Development Authority chairman Shankar Lalwani, Indore mayor Malini Gaud, Indore-2 MLA Ramesh Mendola, Mhow MLA Usha Thakur and Krishnan Murari Moghe. Among them Vijayvargiya was considered as the strongest contender for the ticket.

Though he maintained from the beginning that he is unwilling to contest elections as he is tied up in West Bengal, the BJP strongman also stated in the same vein that he would throw hat in the ring if the party would ask him to do so. But suddenly on Wednesday, he announced that he had decided not to contest election.  Sources stated that the announcement came after BJP told Vijayvargiya that he was granting ticket to some other candidate. “Apparently to save his image, he made the announcement and opted out of the elections,” a senior BJP leader said.
