Indore: French is a scoring subject but only when you study it in continuity. To be in touch with the language, students should prepare on its usage. French expert Laxman Lalwani offers following tips to score well.

Remember this

To improve vocabulary, practise comprehension and solve past papers. Grammar section depends on nouns and their genders. The moment you come across new word, you should know its meaning and gender because in French every noun (living as well as non living) has gender (masculine or feminine).

CBSE class X board exams

How to solve paper?

French paper is of 80 marks. It has four sections

Section A : Comprehension is of 10 marks. As you get 15 minutes of reading time, read it at least twice so you know where to focus. Here again, some questions are based on vocabulary (opposites, similar meanings, completing the sentences by words from the text). So, become familiar with most common words/vocabulary.

Section B: Expression Ecrite (writing skill) of 20 marks: Here, you have to write a letter (10 marks) in which you have choice. So, select the one you are comfortable with but follow proper format of letter writing as every step carries marks. Then you have three short compositions (message writing, dialogue reordering and text completion with given words). Out of these three, you have to do only two (of 5 marks each). I advise you to select message writing (follow proper format). From dialogue writing and text completion, select you can do without mistake.

Section C: Grammar is of 30 marks: 10 grammar topic questions are of 3 marks each Attempt this section carefully as it is like maths. If you write correct word/ answer you will get full marks. Sometimes, students make mistakes when they assume wrong gender of a noun, with which they are not familiar. In most sentences, you will find hint of its gender in form of adjective (or conjugated verb’s past participle). So, read each sentence carefully.

Section D: This part is of literature (culture and civilization) and carries 20 marks. Question/answers (of 10 marks). You have to attempt five out of six questions. Remaining 10 marks are for vrai/ faux (true/ false), reliez les colonnes (match the columns), completez (complete the sentences with given hints), chassez l’intrus (odd one out ). To score better in this section, go through the lessons of text book prescribed by CBSE. You can skip portions ‘je decouvre’ and ‘pour aller plus loin’ as questions will not be asked from these portions (according to new changes in CBSE syllabus).
