Indore: The Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisations (FIAPO) held a silent protest on Tuesday at the CGO complex, asking the Indore Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) to not allow export of live animals from the Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar airport.  FIAPO members wore masks of sheep and goats, to draw attention to the plight of the animals when they are exported alive to other countries, which slaughter them for meat. Protesters drew attention of the DGFT to the fact that the animals were treated cruelly and inhumanely while being flown across the border.

“Animals are not given food, water or even basic care during export. Indore does not even have the mandatory government approved quarantine facility required for export of animals. A large number of animals are injured, emaciated and even killed during transportation” said FIAPO legal affairs manager Varnika Singh.  “These unpleasant conditions and exporting animals live are in direct violation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960, and more than 10 national and international rules. Despite having strong animal protection laws, live export from India is only governed by weak implementation. It is a mockery of the lives of these animals as well as the statute.

We demand the Indore DGFT to order the stoppage of live export from the city immediately” said Varda Mehrotra, Executive Director of FIAPO.  FIAPO member Aayushya Garg said, “This trade is only not inhuman but also violates several laws and guidelines which are not followed to make profits by trading animals. FIAPO has also started a social media campaign called #StopLiveExport which is gaining momentum by the day.” He added that Gujarat government has already stopped this practice. DGFT, Indore was given a letter regarding the same around one week back, but no action has been taken yet.
