Indore: FDA tightens noose around on sweets shop owners

In view of Holi festivities, the food and drug administration (FDA) department has tightened noose against local sweetmeat shop owners by taking samples of sweets and namkeen they sell.  A check drive is already on against milk parlour owners to prevent sale of contaminated milk and milk products. In second phase, department has tightened noose on sellers of mawa and other products as its consumption increases during festivities.

Senior food safety officer Manish Swami said campaign against adulterated food products especially mawa and namkeen (salted snacks) is on in the city. “We have collected samples of sweets especially milk cakes and pedas as most shopkeepers buy them at low prices and sell them at high rates,” he said. The department had collected more than 26 samples of milk from 23 dairies from across city.

“Drive will continue to keep a check on quality of sweets and namkeen as their consumption increases during festival. The samples have been sent to laboratory in Bhopal for testing. Stern action will be taken against shop owners if their products are found adulterated,” Swami said.

Last year, department had seized more than 1,000 kgs of sub standard mawa before festival from different city-bound buses.
“Many shopkeepers use adulterated mawa brought from Neemuch and Gwalior to meet festival demand. We are keeping an eye on buses through which mawa is being supplied to city and other nearby areas,” Swami said.

Camps to renew  licenses and  registrations
While Indore has highest number of licenses and registrations across state, the department has started to renew licenses and registration of shopkeepers. “There are many shopkeepers who have not applied for license renewal. We are holding campaign at various places for it. We’ll act against those who do not renew license,” he added.
