Indore: ‘Dry’ days for Old GDC hostellers

Indore: With empty buckets in hands, girl hostellers of Mata Jijabai Government College also known as Old GDC are spending evenings collecting water from different sources on the campus as a pipeline of overhead water tank of their hostel had snapped.

However, the hostellers claim that the water connection to their hostel has been cut. Water is supplied to two hostels of the college from a well using motor pumps. One hostel is for general category students and the other houses students belonging to SC/ST category.

Pipeline of SC/ST students’ hostel had damaged due to which water supply got disrupted leaving hostellers high and dry. The pipeline damaged three days back but it has not been repaired so far.

As a temporary measure, the college gave connection to SC/ST students hostel from general category students’ hostel. But as the capacity of overwater tank is as per the requirement of only one hostel, the general category students release water to SC/ST students hostel only after their own requirements are met.

Facing acute water shortage, the SC/ST hostellers are forced to run for other sources on the campus. “We are mainly collecting water from a tap at canteen,” hostellers.

They said that the spent day in college and evening collecting water. The students claimed that the college authorities snapped the supply of water for non-payment of some bill. College principal Sumitra Waskel rubbished the claim saying that nobody would deprive anyone of drinking water. “We will get the damaged line repaired,” she said.
