Indore: The idea for providing 100 units of electricity for Rs 100 may see light of day soon as western region power distribution company (west discom) has reportedly given its consent to the ambitious scheme. Discom has sent details and figures to government for execution of the proposed scheme, which was one of the poll planks of the Congress during Assembly elections.

Sources said the government may announce this scheme during Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Bhopal on February 8. During assembly elections, the Congress had stated that they would reduce electricity tariffs by half. On Tuesday, higher education minister Jitu Patwari stated that the government was planning to provide 100 units of electricity for merely Rs 100.

A day later, west discom, which is the biggest power distribution company of state, stated that they have already provided details sought by government for the ambitious scheme. A discom official stated that they had gone through the scheme and found that it won’t be a loss making proposal for the company.

During BJP regime, the government formed discoms to give electricity to registered labourers for fixed amount of Rs 200 under Sambal scheme. Because of this scheme, discoms suffered huge losses. The new scheme is believed to be for all. “It may not be alone for registered labourers but for all who consume 100 units of electricity,” he stated.

not to be at loss

Discom sources said the new scheme won’t be loss making for the company. Under Sambal scheme, the registered labouers had to pay merely Rs 200 no matter how much electricity they consume. West discom, which supplies powers to consumers in 15 districts in Indore and Ujjain division, noticed that nearly 30 percent of registered labourers would consume electricity worth Rs 800 to 1500 per month.

They paid merely Rs 200 as per the government scheme. This led to a huge loss of Rs 400 crore to discom as it covered 20 lakh consumers under the scheme. The new scheme stipulates that the consumers consume up to 100 units would have to pay as per government scheme. Those who will consume more will have to pay charges fixed by the company. It is because of this condition, the company believe that the scheme won’t be loss making.
