Indore: To give 10 per cent quota to economically weak students, Indian Institute of Management, Indore, has decided to increase 25 per cent seats in its courses but in a phased manner. “We are going to increase 25 per cent seats in two academic sessions. 8 per cent seats will be increased from session 2019-20 and 17 per cent seats from session 2020-2021,” said Prof Himanshu Rai, director, IIM Indore.

He stated that they are going to increase seats in two phases because they do not have infrastructure to accommodate the increased 25 per cent lot in one go.  “In one year, we will build hostels and then increase intake capacity taking it to 25 per cent,” he added. The Ministry of Human Resource and Development had directed institutes of higher learning to increase 25 per cent seats to ensure that the 10 per cent reservation recently given to the Economically Backward Section (EWS) does not disturb existing quotas for the scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and other backward classes.

As per information, the institutes had to increase 25 per cent seats from session 2019-20 but Rai said that the MHRD had relaxed the condition.  “The government has allowed us to increase 25 per cent seats till session 2020-2021,” he said. Rai said that the relaxation in the condition has come as a major relief to residential institutions as now they have time to build up hostels accomodate the increased lot.

No of teachers also increase
The increase in number of seats will upset the student-teacher ratio so the institutions would have to appoint more teachers to balance out. That means there won’t be expansion of only infrastructure at institutes but teaching hands will also increase. The IIM Indore director said that they would be appointing teachers from foreign countries also.

Three main flagship courses
There are three main flagship courses of IIM Indore – PGP in Management, five-year Integrated Programme in Management and PGP in Human Resource Management.  IPM course is only offered by IIM Indore and it consists of 120 seats whereas the biggest batch of PGP in Management is run by this b-school. PGP in Management batch size is 450 students.
