AIndore: A day after a tunnel was found behind the city zoo during ground breaking to accommodate a sewerage line, Indore Municipal Corporation found two wells and a bawadi inside the tunnel. “A bawadi and two wells were also found at the place where a tunnel was discovered on Sunday,” an official of IMC stated. With joining points, the IMC has developed a theory that decades ago people could have used the tunnel to fetch water from the bawadi and wells.
The employees of a company were digging the ground to accommodate a sewerage line behind Kamla Nehru Prani Sangrahalaya, the city zoo, on Sunday when they discovered a “11-feet high and 6-feet wide” tunnel. He said IMC had no idea about this tunnel behind the city zoo. People of the locality who have been residing there for several decades also stated that they have never seen anyone constructing tunnel in the locality.
However, people and officials who had gathered at the tunnel site wondered if this was built during the British regime. IMC officers stated that they would find out for what purpose the tunnel was built. When IMC found wells and bawadi it stated that the tunnel was perhaps built for fetching water. “We will take help from Archeological Survey of India (ASI) to establish when it was exactly built and why,” the IMC officer said.
