Indore: After being harassed by IMC staff, man attempts suicide

Indore: A 49-year-old man attempted suicide by consuming some chemical substance on Wednesday allegedly after being harassed by Indore Municipal Corporation employees for extortion money to allow him to put up his handcart near the railway station.

He was allegedly thrashed by IMC officials for not giving money and they also broke his handcart. According to police, Abdul Hamid, resident of Chandan Nagar, is a fruit vendor and use to stand near the railway station. “Abdul attempted suicide by consuming some chemical substance when IMC employees were breaking his handcart.

He was rushed to MY Hospital by family members and is undergoing treatment,” police said. Son of Abdul, Sonu alleged that some IMC employees thrashed him for not giving extortion money of Rs 1,000 on Wednesday. “IMC employees take extortion money of Rs 1,000 per month from every stall.

Abdul was not going to the railway station from a long time and resumed business just a few days ago,” he said adding, “He refused to give Rs 1,000 to IMC employees as one month was not over due to which they thrashed him and also broke his handcart.” Sonu and other handcart owners had gone to lodge a complaint against IMC employees at Chhoti Gwaltoli police station on Wednesday when Abdul took the extreme step. Police have been investigating the matter.
