Indore: Cries for help continue to rise as freezing weathers take a toll on animals in the city. Over 20 stray dogs have lost the fight to cold and are among the few who were taken to government veterinary hospital at the last minute for treatment in the last couple of days.

Though the situation is a little better for pets staying in human care, most pets are also suffering from cough and cold. About 4 cases are reported everyday since last 10 days, where pets are suffering from various illness mostly extreme cough and cold at the hospital. Other than this, about 5 such cases of stray dogs are handled by animal activists in the city as well with advised treatments of private practitioners.

Overall, over 40 extreme illness cases have been registered at govt hospital and about 5 to 10 in every private clinic. The sorry situation of stray dogs has concerned residents of several, who are rescuing them and providing temporary shelters from cool breeze. Even some shopkeepers are allowing stray dogs to stay in outside sheds in various areas of the city including Vijay Nagar, Mahalaxmi Nagar and SapnaSangeeta.

To find out about conditions of animals in different areas, protection measures and common problems, we talked to veterinary doctors, experts and animal activist. Following are concluding statements that show real conditions of animals in Indore.

Cases multiplied
The number of cases reporting extreme cough and cold have multiplied four times already. Last year, we had overall 8 to 10 cases. This year, we already have over 40 cases. Casualties are more common in stray dogs because they are left untreated for too long and are apprehensive about human touch.

Still we try to manage by putting them on drip, but they rarely respond to it. Most stray dogs suffer from dehydration, lack of nutrition and shivers during winters. Veterinarian at Veterinary Government Hospital Dr Prashant Tiwari

Open areas report more cases

About 6 dogs lost their life due to cold winds this year. Many more might have lost their lives in open areas of the city. The number of illness cases have also been on the rise. Most cases are reported from airport road and Mahalaxminagar, where the area is open and cooler. Animal activist Priyanshu Jain

Tips for care

· Do not give your pet frequent bath or expose them to water as it is difficult to dry them in winters.
· Opt for dry baths in case the pet gets too dirty.
· Serve home-cooked meals warm meals as far as possible.
· Pets need more activity, so one kilometre walk in morning and evening is must. Activity can be increased for active pets.
· Coats are must for cold nights to protect them from falling temperature.

Parvovirus on rise

Canine parvovirus cases have been rising and affecting most dogs. Though this virus is present in dogs in latent stage, it becomes active and takes over the wellness of dog in extreme temperatures. There have been cases where puppies skipped 42nd day medication and hence, could not survive the winters.

For stray dogs, only some people are able to bring them to clinic. For others, I advise them medications and tips on phone consultancy. I have received over 25 such calls for help in the last 10 days, whereas normally I get 5 to 10 at max. Veterinarian Dr Sandeep Nanavati
