IIT, IIM combo can make City a start-up hub

Indore : Stating that Indore is the only city in the country to have both IIT and IIM, former director general of Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Raghunath Anant Mashelkar here on Monday the combo of these two elite institutes can make the city a hub for promoting entrepreneurship.

“IIT and IIM in Indore together can nature entrepreneurship. The i5 Summit conducted jointly by students of both the premier institutes for encouraging start-ups can be seen as a step in that direction. Many more such steps are required,” he said while addressing the third convocation ceremony of Indian Institute of Technology Indore organised at Simrol campus of the institute on Monday.

Mashelkar was chief guest of the convocation ceremony and he delivered the convocation address at the function.

Degrees were conferred on BTech, MTech, MSc students and PhD scholars during the ceremony which was conducted three months late compared to previous years’.

BTech students who had left the campus in the last week April after completing their course had returned on the institute to collect their degrees.

Proud parents of the graduating students were also present in the large numbers.

Mashelkar said that if the IIT Indore wanted to figure into the list of top institutions in the world then it had to integrate education, research and innovation at larger scale.

He said that the country is growing rapidly and the graduating students can contribute to the growth of the country. He called upon students to create wealth for Indian while working in India.

“The scenario is changing. It has always been great to be an Indian. Now, it’s great to be in India as well,” he concluded.

IIT Indore board chairman Ajay Piramal boasting about state-of-art facilities at IIT Indore said that this institute will become one of the best institutions in the country in next one decade.

He said that “Make in India” and “Digital India” will be successful only when young talented minds are roped into these initiatives.

While presenting its annual report, IIT Indore director Pradeep Mathur said that the institute has achieved many milestones in academic excellence and interdisciplinary research.

He highlighted some of the achievements of the institute with a special mention of 82 research projects with teachers of the institute and six patents by Dr Anirban Sengupta on its work on mobile. “We have 480 students and 380 research scholars on the campus,” he said adding that the institute’s scheme for “Promotion of Research/Innovation for Undergraduate Students” is going well. He also said that 94 out of 97 students who participated in the campus placements got jobs while others opted for higher studies.
