IIM Indore gets responsibility to hold the test, which is a gateway to admission in 13 IIMs and 150 non-IIMs, again as it restored CAT’s credibility after the 2013 debacle
Indore: The Indian Institute of Management Indore is going to conduct Common Admission Test (CAT) again this year thus becoming the only IIM to hold the CAT back-to-back. Every year, the CAT is assigned to IIMs in a rotational matter. This is for the first time in the history of CAT that an IIM is going to conduct the test for two consecutive years.
Why so? Explains a professor of IIM Indore: “After CAT scam surfaced in June last year, the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) observed that the rotational pattern is not good and asked the IIMs directors to repeat test conducting institute if it successfully holds the CAT. Accordingly, the IIMs re-assigned the task of conducting CAT this year again to IIM Indore.”
The IIM Indore had conducted CAT-2013 hassle-free. A year before that IIM Kozhikode had conducted CAT which drew flaks as scorecards of 80 were found tampered with. The IIMs in a joint statement had said that their admission process remained unaffected despite tampering of scorecards as they used the master database for short listing of candidates. The scorecards on official website of CAT were altered which were used by non-IIM institutes that have a formal relationship for the use of scores.
After the scam surfaced, the onus of restoring credibility of CAT was on IIM Indore which conducted CAT-2013. As it succeeded in the purpose, the institute has been re-entrusted the responsibility of conducting the CAT-2014 as well. This year, the IIM Indore’s partner for CAT-2014 will be Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) as US-based Prometric five year contract ended with CAT-2013.
The TCS has been awarded contract for organising CAT for next five years for Rs 29 crore. Though the TCS officials have confirmed the information, the IIMs are likely to make formal announcement of this in July.
