Indore : A high voltage drama enacted at Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya vice-chancellor’s office, on Friday when some students of Al-Farooq Unani Medical College alleged that the college management tampered with attendance register to show their attendance short even as the management refuted the charges.

Heated arguments took place between students and the college management even as acting vice chancellor Ashutosh Mishra and Registrar RD Musalgaonkar tried in vain to pacify both the sides.

The college was later instructed to conduct additional classes for students with short attendance, so that they can take part in exams. Following the complaints by students that they were advertently put in the category of students with short attendance as they joined a protest by the NSUI, the DAVV had summoned college principal Salim Akhtar and office-bearers of the college to present their side, on Friday.

College chairman LH Qureshi, secretary Mujib Qureshi and governing body chairman Imran Ali reached the university. Aggrieved students and their parents too reached the varsity to put up their side.

When the acting vice chancellor sought the college to clear the air on the charges leveled by the students, the college management rubbished the allegations. This led to heated altercation between the college office-bearers and the students. Mother of a girl student alleged that when she had gone to the college to talk to the principal over shortage of attendance issue, he misbehaved with her and even threatened to call police if she did not leave his chamber.

The college officer-bearers termed the allegations false and stated that they would talk further on the subject only when Akhtar arrives.

V-C pulls up principal for reporting late

Mishra had called the college officer-bearers to his office at 3 pm but Akhtar reached the university one hour late. To this, the acting VC pulled him up saying, “Your attitude mirrors how responsible you are in your approach.” On allegation regarding filing of FIR against students, the college principal said that what option he would have if students continued protest outside his office. To this, Mishra said that if the colleges would start filing police complaints against students where would they go to raise their grievances. “Protests are regular phenomena at DAVV but we don’t file police complaint against protesting students. This isn’t appropriate,” Mishra added.

I have no clue on extra classes norm: Principal

As tempers ran high over short attendance issue, Musalgaonkar asked the college principal to hold extra classes for students with short attendance so that they become eligible for exams. To this, Akhtar said that there is no rule for extra classes for students with short attendance. Taking aback by this, Musalgaonkar said that he was shocked to learn that the college principal does not know even the academic norms. Eventually, the college agreed to hold extra classes for aggrieved students so that they can meet the required 75 per cent of attendance.
