Girl hosteller dies at IIST, students vent ire

The incident sent the academic activities at the college at bay and a state of tension prevailed at the college campus on Friday.BE I Semester student Shanti Chetri, who resided at the girls’ hostel of the college, vomited around 3.30 AM at her room on Friday.

When her roommate Palak Garg rushed to attend her, she was shocked to notice blood in the vomit. Somehow they went to bed again. However, the deceased vomited again in a short while and collapsed immediately.

Palak noticed large amount of blood in the vomit and found that Shanti was exhausted and decrepit. She informed the warden. However, it was at 5.30am, when other girls too came to know about the matter and gathered at her room then the matter was taken seriously.

They too were shocked to see Shanti lying unconscious on the floor in a pool of blood and vomit.Due to non- availability of vehicle at the hostel, she could be rushed to the hospital after one hour. She was rushed in the college vehicle at 6.30 am to CHL Hospital, where she was declared brought dead. However, the college management is claiming that she died during treatment at the hospital.

Back at the college, when the word about the death of a hosteller spread across the college campus, students called off academic activities and went on to stage a protest against delay in rushing her to the hospital and the apathetic attitude of the college authorities. The students were claiming that the authorities were informed in the night itself but they kept postponing the matter until morning since there was no vehicle that could take the girl to the hospital.

However, College Principal MS Murthy told the students that there was no delay on part of the college administration and she was rushed to the hospital as soon as the matter was reported. The enraged students did not trust the principal and demanded meeting with hostellers, who were confined to the hostel on Friday after the incident and not allowed to visit the college campus.

Finally, the principal conceded to the demand of students and a 5- member student delegation was allowed to meet the hostellers. The girls more or less confirmed the statement of the principal with a few exceptions and this nearly convinced the protestors to end their demonstration though they continued it for some more time before calling it off.

When Principal Murthy was asked about the matter, he said that he knew nothing of the medical condition of the girl. She used to take leaves often but they were assumed normal visits. When asked why there was not a single vehicle to take the deceased to hospital at the night itself, he said that a proposal for ambulance has been sent and response to it is awaited.

At the hospital, where the girl’s body was kept, her mother was wailing and questioning her husband’s decision of sending their daughter to the hostel even when her medical condition was not normal. The deceased was suffering kidney and liver ailments.

On the night of the incident, the girl conceded to kidney / liver failure, which imposed an attack on her body. The deceased hailed from Siliguri though her parents reside in Khandwa at present owing to her father’s posting there. She is survived by two siblings.

Later in the day, NSUI activists demanded compensation to the deceased’s family, to which the college principal said that her father has given in writing that he does not want any compensation.
