Drug trials to return to MGM in a new garb

Indore: Even after the State Government ban on clinical trials, the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College is gearing up to conduct drug trials in the garb of ‘ faculty research’. The college authorities have not informed the State Government and any other authorities about the drug trials and are violating the new rules of the Central Drug Standard Control Organisation ( CDSCO).

According to sources, the college authorities issued a pro- forma to its faculties to submit details of their research work to be reviewed by the Ethics Committee. The college is planning to get approval from the Ethics Committee for ‘ clinical trials’ in the name of faculty research programme.

Sources added that as per the new amendments of the Drug and Cosmetic Act ( Appendix 5), introduced by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, a researcher has to submit contact details of the patient along with patient’s qualification, and name and address of the nominee ( s) if any for the purpose of compensation, his occupation, annual income, and name of the witnesses in the consent form of the patient.

It seems, the medical college authorities don’t want to leave any stone unturned to fool the State Government as many of their doctors were found guilty in drug trials that took place between 2005 and 2008, at M Hospital.

When contacted, DME SC Tiwari said: “ We have not given any order for drug trials and did not get any information from the medical college.”
