Indore : The Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV) on Friday took resignation from School of Physical Education head SK Yadav after a news report revealed that a Dalit research scholar was allegedly being harassed mentally by her HoD and the PhD guide.
After the news report was published by Free Press on Friday, the State Government reportedly sought to know full details of the case from the university which in turn suggested Yadav to put in his papers.
Going by the suggestion, Yadav resigned as head of School of Physical Education.
Acting vice-chancellor Prof Ashutosh Mishra confirmed that Yadav had put in his paper as HoD.
“Prof Deepak Mehta will be the new head of the teaching department,” Mishra said refusing to comment any further in the matter.
Though his resignation came on the same day when the news report of Basanti Bamaniya accusing him of harassing her mentally was published, Yadav claimed that his resignation had nothing to do with the accusation made by the research scholar.
“I resigned as my 3-year tenure as HoD was about to complete,” he said adding that he had no role in Basanti’s case.
Basanti, who belongs to Scheduled Caste category, had lodged a complaint with DAVV authorities alleging mental harassment by her PhD guide Vivek B Sathe and Yadav.
Taken aback by allegations leveled by her, the acting vice chancellor on Thursday said that he would order a probe into the matter. In her verbal complaint, Basanti had said that she was selected by the University Grants Commission (UGC) for Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship for SC candidate which should have been made effective from the date of her PhD registration.
Basanti claimed that she was registered for the PhD programme about one-and-a-half year back and joined the programme straight away.
However, she alleged that School of Physical education authorities manipulated her joining date in the fellowship form and showed it from the last week of January. Accusing of Yadav and her guide Sathe of harassment, Basanti said that she would lose grant of lakhs of rupees if the facts were not set right in the fellowship form.
She even had threatened of lodging a complaint with the National Commission for Scheduled Castes if she did not get justice from the DAVV authorities.
Yadav and Sathe reportedly told the DAVV authorities that she joined the programme late, which according to Basanti is a false claim.
As per a letter received by the PhD student, she has been selected for Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship for SC candidate for session 2016-17. “The tenure of the fellowship is five years and it commences with respect from April 1, 2015 or from the date of registration under MPhil/PhD or from the date of joining in MPhil/PhD programme,” the UGC letter states.
If the School of Physical Education literally wants her to help, they could only mention in the fellowship form her date of registration in PhD course but they are hell-bent on her joining date.
