Indore : Stating that the Indian Institutes of Technology are playing their role in building the country, former President APJ Abdul Kalam here on Thursday said that the brand IIT is synonym of excellence and integrity.
“Brand IIT in educational institutes abroad is known for excellence, integrity and creativity,” he said while addressing the second convocation ceremony of IIT Indore at Simrol.
As many as 112 BTech students and seven PhD students who graduated from the institute on Thursday were awarded degrees.
Addressing the passing out batch students, Kalam said that he had two messages for them.
“First, think what you can give to the society and work on that. Second, be the captain of your problems and defeat them to achieve success. If you worked on these two things, you will see that not only you but the country will also progress.”
Hailing the IIT Indore, Kalam said that it was nice to learn that the institute is focusing on research. “Remarkable work has been done by the IIT Indore in signals, molecules and medical applications.”
The former president said, “Today scenario is changing and even local and regional problems are dealt at global level.”
Citing an example, he said that today technicians and professionals from China, Russia and other countries sit at a centre in India and solves problems of a company of Australia.
The former president also spoke on urban and rural divide and said that the divide is narrowing but still a lot has to be done to completely bridge it.
Earlier, IIT Indore board chairman Ajay Piramal addressing the graduating batch students said that opportunity are endless and it’s about them to choose one that suit them. He stated that the institute is committed to develop infrastructure and facilities that facilitate frontline research.
In his speech, director Pradeep Mathur said that after a long struggle they have managed to progress on construction of their own campus at Simrol. He stated that the institute which was established in 2009 today has 476 BTech students and 212 PhD students.
Kotha Samhitha Reddy gets Prez medal
Kotha Samhitha Reddy of electrical engineering discipline was awarded the President of India medal for her performance. He was the overall topper of 2010-14 batch. Besides, three silver medals were given to the toppers of different disciplines. While Harshit Aggrawal got medal in computer science and engineering discipline, N Swati and Jeet Ashok Paswani won silver medals in electrical engineering and mechanical engineering respectively. Apart from this Harshit Aggrawal was conferred award for best BTech project among all disciplines.

“Coming to IIT Indore after clearing JEE in first attempt was my first ever experience of living alone, away from my parents which was very tough for me. I didn’t think then that I would be topper of my batch and would receive the award from Abdul Kalam. Now, I am focusing on getting into a premier management institute of the country.”
Hails from Banglore and became the overall topper to bag the President’s Gold Medal.
“I got into IIT Indore initially with mechanical branch but soon I realised my interest in software engineering and upgraded my branch. I keenly worked on Open Source Technology Project which helps in the symbiotic relationship between students and faculties. The project was implemented in the second year. Now, I want to work in cloud computing.”

“I am basically from Hyderabad and Indore city welcomed me with open arms. Despite the institute being in its initial year, provided us all the essential amenities with a good placement offer in Cisco, Banglore. Now I will take up this job and after gaining 2-3 years experience, I will get back to education.”
