Indore : The City Zoo was one of the sought after place to visit on the Mother’s Day. On the occasion, one can find zoo inmates are being adopted and nourished by other species. Some of the animals were rescued by the District Forest Department while others were born in the zoo itself.

Informing about the unique experiment, Dr Uttam Yadav, in-charge of the Zoo, told Free Press that the feeling of motherhood is present in every living being.

“Seeing she dog and goat feeding young ones of jackals, tigers and deer is a great feeling. It shows that the feeling of motherhood touches every living being and it is not exclusive for human only,” said, Dr Yadav.

He said the zoo staffers were lucky to see these instances very often. But for the visitors, it’s an entirely unique thing. In an attempt to keep the excitement of visitors alive, the zoo staffers even at times bring new ones and their step-mothers out in the open so that the visitors too have a unique experience while visiting the zoo.

Yadav said at present, a deer is being fed by a goat. He reminded that earlier too, four jackal pups found mother in a female dog. Their mother was attacked and killed by stray dogs. The pups were rescued by the forest department from Limbodi village and later handed them over the City Zoo for their proper caretaking. Recently, a deer was seen under the care of a goat. Similar experiment was performed by the zoo officials close to a year ago when white tigress Shivani gave birth to four cubs but unfortunately, mishandling led three to death. The last cub was somehow saved and later found a stepmother in a she dog. Yadav said, initially, the dog wasn’t adopting the cub. But to the luck of cub, the female dog too at that time had given birth to a new one and that helped us a lot.

“From time to time, the dog’s new one was replaced and cub was placed. After a few days, the she dog adopted the cub. They still share a close bond,” Yadav added. An enthusiastic Yadav described the day at the city zoo to be a unique one.
