A housewife was stripped naked, gangraped and battered in full public glare in Tripura, police said on Saturday, reports IANS.
“A 37-year-old woman was gangraped at Bishalgarh in western Tripura on Wednesday night. After the rape, the women was stripped naked, brutally beaten up and then tied to a tree,” a police official told reporters here.
Based on the victim’s complaint, police immediately swung into action and arrested seven people. However, three more accused, including the main one, are on the run. Police said the accused dragged the housewife from her home and took turns to rape her before many people, including women. But no one dared to come forward to save the mother of a five-year-old. The role of the husband is also being probed, the police official said. In another related incident in Agartala, a woman was allegedly stripped and tied with tree for several hours after appearing at a ‘kangaroo court’ in Sipahijala district of Tripura, police said. Seven persons, including three women, have been arrested in connection with yesterday’s incident at Rangapania village which took place following an argument between the woman and some village elders, police said. The woman was summoned to the ‘court’ on her husband’s complaint that she was having an illicit relationship with a youth but the charges could not be established and an argument broke out between her and the others present. She was then beaten up by some people. They stripped and tied her hands and legs with a tree, police said. The ordeal went on for several hours till she was rescued by some others and admitted to Bishalgarh hospital. Yesterday, police raided the village and made the arrests.
