Kolkata : The ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal is enmeshed in a fresh controversy. An FIR has been lodged against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew and s Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee for publicly threatening those who dared to challenge the party.
Abhishek Banerjee is an MP from Diamond Harbour in South 24 Parganas district. While addressing a party rally on Monday he allegedly threatened to “chop off hands and tear out eyes and throw it on the street” of those who would challenge the Trinamool Congress.
The president of Trinamool Congress youth wing, Banerjee also made disparaging comments about Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that most of the political parties have fallen at his feet, but TMC had not.
Criticising Abhishek’s comments, BJP national secretary Siddharth Nath Singh said, “The comments are a reflection of the DNA of Trinamool Congress. This is what is expected of Trinamool and its leaders.”
Condemning the remark, CPI (M) MP Mohammad Salim said, “All parties have some such element, but the Trinamool is a party of hooligans and goons. In Bengal, there is no rule of law and the police will never take action because in the Mamata regime they themselves are not safe.’’
Another TMC Lok Sabha member Tapas Paul had made similar comments while addressing a party rally: he had asked party workers to rape women supporters of the CPM.
