Kolkata: TMC-Left Front slammed the BJP led Central government over their empowerment of 13 districts across 3 states to grant citizenship to non-Muslim refugees from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh on Friday.

Taking a dig at the BJP led Central government, TMC MLA Tapas Roy said that after failing to curb the pandemic, the BJP government is now trying to create a new chaos in the country.

“At this point vaccinations are needed so that people across the country stay safe. Since the BJP government has failed to assure vaccination to the states, now they are trying to turn people’s face from the pandemic for which once they are recalling the Chief Secretary and then trying to implement CAA,” claimed the TMC MLA.

Senior Left Front Leader and advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya said that currently safety of people is more important than CAA.

“The central government should focus on vaccinating everyone in the country. As only vaccination can save lives as the second wave of covid is having a deadly effect on India,” claimed the senior politburo member.

Notably, on May 28, the Ministry of Home Affairs had circulated a notice that Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Jain, Parsis, Buddhists who are residing in India from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh can apply for citizenship of India according to the citizenship amendment act 1955.

“In exercise of powers conferred under Section 16 of the Citizenship Act, 1955 (57 of 1955), the central government hereby directs that powers exercisable by it for registration as citizen of India under Section 5. The application for registration as citizen of India or grant of certificate of naturalisation as citizen of India under the said rules (Citizenship Rules, 2009) shall be made by the applicant online,” the notification said.

West Bengal BJP Chief Dilip Ghosh said that under Citizenship Act 1955 every non-Muslims from the neighboring countries settled in India till 2014 can apply for citizenship of India.
