Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on Tuesday said the opinion that an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will be honest and on the right path need not be correct.

Responding to opposition’s demand for a CBI inquiry into the suicide of R. Vishnupriya, deputy superintendent of police (DSP), Jayalalithaa said in the assembly: “The view that only CBI investigation will be honest is not right.” She said in a case that attracted the national attention, a complaint has been filed against a retired CBI director and the matter is being inquired into by the Supreme Court. Jayalaltihaa said the CBI took up probe in some cases involving politicians of Tamil Nadu only after the Supreme Court ordered so. The chief minister also listed out several other pending cases investigated by the CBI and the successful probes completed by Crime Branch-Crime Investigation Department of the state police. Jayalalithaa said it could be an individual opinion that CBI probe would be right and it need not be actually true.

On September 18, Vishnupriya was found hanging at her residence-cum-office. The police recovered a suicide note that stated that she was under pressure to take the extreme step. The state government ordered the case to be investigated by Crime Branch-Crime Investigation Department (CBCID) while the opposition demanded the case be transferred to the CBI. Vishnupriya’s batchmate and another DSP, Uma Maheswari, alleged that her friend committed suicide as she was under pressure from her superiors about the probe in a murder case. Jayalalithaa said Vishnupriya suicide case is not very complicated that needs a CBI probe. The CBCID police will probe the case in an objective manner fast, she added.
