NEW DELHI: The Government is pushing the triple talaq abolition bill in the Lok Sabha on Friday on the very first working day of the House, with President Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday urging the members of Parliament "to cooperate in these efforts (of the government) to make the lives of our sisters and daughters better and dignified."
Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad will be introducing the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 as the government''s first legislation on Friday to prohibit divorce by pronouncing talaq by husbands.
It is to replace an Ordinance promulgated in February after the government failed to get the previous Bill passed in the Rajya Sabha.
In his address to a joint session of the two Houses of Parliament, Kovind said "eradication of social evils like ‘Triple Talaq’ and ‘Nikah-Halala’ is imperative" to secure equal rights to women.
The previous Lok Sabha had also passed the "Triple Talaq" bill that prescribes jail up to three years to the husbands for the alleged illegal divorce, but it was stuck in the Rajya Sabha where the government does not have the majority.
