Mamata to lead march on April 8 against ‘draconian’ and ‘kala’ ordinance

Kolkata : West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will hit the streets here on April 8 against the Narendra Modi government’s ordinance amending the land acquisition law, the Trinamool Congress announced on Thursday.

Disclosing this at a media meet here, Trinamool secretary general Partha Chatterjee said Banerjee, who is also the party supremo, would take part in the protest rally to be taken out by the party from Moulali to Gandhi statue on Mayo Road. Calling the acquisition “draconian” and “kala ordinance” (black ordinance), Chatterjee said: “We will protest against it.”

“Our party chairperson will participate in the mega rally in Kolkata against the ordinance. Similar rallies will be held in every district of Bengal,” he said.

Chatterjee, also the state education minister, said the protesters would wear black badges and cover their mouth with a black cloth.

Calling upon the people of Kolkata to participate in the rally, he recalled that the party had carried out movements against land acquisition in the past too. The Trinamool had led a farmers’ protest in Nandigram in East Midnapore district and Hooghly district’s Singur in protest against the then Left Front government’s bid to acquire farmland for industries between 2006 and 2008.

Maya laments ‘double trouble’

BSP supremo Mayawati on Thursday alleged that with the Land Acquisition Bill, the Modi government was working for an arrangement by which the land of farmers would be forcibly snatched.

She also lamented about “double troubles” faced by the people of the state due to the wrong policies of the Central and state governments.

“The government which had promised to bring ‘achchey din’ is bent upon making people cry and for the 20 crore people of Uttar Pradesh who are also faced with the discriminatory and casteist politics of the SP government, it is double trouble,” she said while addressing party leaders and office bearers here.

Sonia says congress won’t compromise on land bill

Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday said the party will not compromise on the land bill passed by the UPA government and termed as “anti-farmer” the new legislation brought by the Modi government.

Gandhi, who visited Mansa, Malakheda, Mokhan and Kadarna in Madhya Pradesh’s Neemuch district to meet farmers whose crops have been damaged in the recent untimely rains, said the party was firm on the bill that was passed in 2013 during its own tenure.  She also expressed shock over the state government’s “silence” despite the high suicide rate among farmers in the region.

“You know what is happening about the land bill. We will not compromise on it. The new bill is anti-farmer. We are firm on the bill that was passed by Congress-led UPA government,” Gandhi said.

Noting that the land bill of 2013 was supported by several parties, including the BJP, she asked: “You tell me what is wrong with the bill. The new bill is not in the interest of farmers.” It was in the interests of corporate sector, she added.
