Mysuru : In a controversial remark, Karnataka Governor Vajubhai R. Vala has said that girls need not go to colleges “as though they were going to a beauty contest” wearing lipstick and with their eyebrows trimmed. Speaking at the valedictory event of the Indian Science Congress here on Thursday, he said though boys and girls were equally intelligent, girls are more serious in studies than boys. But there was no need for girls to be fashionable while going to college. It is not a fashion parade, he added.
Students and women activists slammed the Governor saying that his views were archaic and putting on lipstick or trimming eyebrows were personal choice. Shwetha Gowda, a student, said the Governor probably lives in the past. The Governor said the present generation was very intelligent. “A small boy can repeat fluently an advertisement that he would have seen on TV. During our times, we were unable to understand lessons even if our teacher taught them thrice.”
