New Delhi : Shashi Tharoor, who was sacked as the Congress spokesman in the wake of his effusive praise of Prime Minister, attacked the Narendra Modi-led government on Thursday for “ignoring the martyrdom” of Indira Gandhi, whose death anniversary falls today.

Tharoor said on Twitter, “Disgraceful that government is ignoring the martyrdom of our only Prime Minister who was killed in office in the line of duty. Oct 31 forgotten?”

The Congress had sacked Tharoor as its national spokesperson a fortnight back. The KPCC’s argument was that Tharoor has been repeatedly praising Modi. Days after Modi was sworn in as Prime Minister, Tharoor said his comments so far have been “very conciliatory and inclusive”. Later, he suggested Modi has evolved into Modi 2.0 and argued that the Congress should not be “churlish” to ignore his inclusive outreach.

The Modi-led government had earlier declared October 31 as ‘Rashtriya Ekta Diwas’ (National Unity Day) to mark the birth anniversary of the country’s first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, with a one-km ‘Run of Unity’ in central Delhi and there was no mention of the former PM Indira Gandhi, even though it is her death anniversary.

The Congress is upset that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is trying to underplay former PM Indira Gandhi on her death anniversary. In a recent meeting of senior Congress leaders they decided to launch a full-fledged attack on Modi, questioning his intention of playing with history and ignoring the contributions of Indira Gandhi, as if she were the Congress Prime Minister and not the PM of India.

The Modi-led government had recently decided that it will associate only with the birth and death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, and the anniversaries of other departed leaders may be observed by respective trusts, parties, societies or supporters. It has also decided not to convert government bungalows into memorials.
