Kolkata : West Bengal government will hand over cheques to 800 unwilling farmers of Singur on Wednesday as compensation following the verdict of the Supreme Court. The cheques will be handed over at a function in presence of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Singur to commemorate the verdict of the apex court. The Supreme Court on August 31 quashed the CPI(M) led West Bengal government’s acquisition of 997 acres of multi-cropped land for setting up the Tata Motors’ small car project Nano in the sleepy hamlet of Hooghly district.
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday told media persons after a high level administrative meeting that the state government has already surveyed and demarcated 620 acres out of 997 acres in Singur within two weeks following the verdict. She said the state government has already prepared 800 cheques which will be handed over to the “unwilling” farmers who had refused to take compensation from the government.
She said that apart from this the state government also prepared 9117 land deeds which will also be handed over to the farmers of Singur. “We will follow the directives of the Supreme Court word by word and will send a report to the apex court about the progress of returning of land to the farmers,” she said.
Mamata Banerjee said that the state government has also decided to make the acquired land cultivable and hand them over to the farmers so that they can start farming.
