NEW DELHI – Elections to the 16th Lok Sabha will be held in nine phases during Apr 7-May 12. The General Elections will cover 28 states and seven Union Territories, with simultaneous Assembly polls in Odisha, Sikkim and Andhra Pradesh, according to the schedule announced by the Election Commission of India. .

A timeline of key dates in the upcoming election:

Mar 15: Notification of Phase 2, Phase 3 (Part-I) Lok Sabha poll.

Apr 07: Lok Sabha election starts with Phase 1 of voting for six parliamentary constituencies in Assam (5 seats) and Tripura (1 seat).
Apr 09: Phase 2 voting of Lok Sabha election to cover seven parliamentary constituencies in the north-eastern states of Arunachal Pradesh (2 seats), Meghalaya (2 seats), Manipur (1 seat), Mizoram (1 seat), and Nagaland (1 seat). By-election for one assembly constituency in Mizoram also to be held.
Apr 09: Last date for filing nominations for Phase 7 Lok Sabha poll. Apr 09: Last date for withdrawal of candidature for  Phase 6 Lok Sabha poll.
Apr 10: Phase 3 voting of Lok Sabha election to cover 92 seats across 10 states–Kerala (20 seats), Maharashtra (10 seats), Odisha (10 seats), Haryana (10 seats), Uttar Pradesh (10 seats), Madhya Pradesh (9  seats), Bihar (6 seats), Jharkhand (5 seats), Chhattisgarh (1 seat), Jammu & Kashmir (1 seat), and four Union Territories–Andaman & Nicobar Islands (1 seat), Chandigarh (1 seat), Lakshadweep (1 seat) and  National Capital Territory of Delhi (7 seats). Voting for 70 Assembly seats in Odisha and for one by-election in Maharashtra will also be held.

Apr 10: Scrutiny of nominations for Phase 7 Lok Sabha poll.
Apr 12: Phase 4 voting of Lok Sabha poll for five seats in Assam (3 seats),
Sikkim (1 seat), Tripura (1 seat). Voting also for 32 Sikkim assembly seats.
Apr 12: Notification of Phase 8 Lok Sabha poll.

Apr 12: Last date for withdrawal of candidature for Phase 7 Lok Sabha poll.

Apr 17: Phase 5 voting of Lok Sabha poll to cover 122 seats across 13 states–Karnataka (28 seats), Rajasthan (20 seats), Maharashtra (19 seats), Odisha (11 seats), Uttar Pradesh (11 seats), Madhya Pradesh (10 seats), Bihar (7 seats), Jharkhand (5 seats), West Bengal (4 seats), Chhattisgarh (3 seats), Goa (2 seats), Jammu & Kashmir (1 seat), Manipur (1 seat). Voting also for 77 Assembly seats in Odisha and for by-elections for two Assembly constituencies in West Bengal.

Apr 19: Last date for filing nominations for Phase 8 Lok Sabha poll.
Apr 21: Scrutiny of nominations for Phase 8 Lok Sabha poll.
Apr 23: Last date for withdrawal of candidature for Phase 8 Lok Sabha poll.
Apr 24: Phase 6 voting of Lok Sabha election to cover 117 parliamentary constituencies in 11 states– Tamil Nadu (39 seats), Maharashtra (19 seats), Uttar Pradesh (12 seats), Madhya Pradesh (10 seats), Bihar (7 seats), Chhattisgarh (7 seats), West Bengal (6 seats), Assam (6 seats), Rajasthan (5 seats), Jharkhand (4 seats), Jammu & Kashmir (1 seat), and one union territory–Puducherry (1 seat). Also, by-election for one Assembly seats each in Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

Apr 28: Last date for withdrawal of candidature for Phase 9 Lok Sabha poll.

Apr 30: Phase 7 vting of Lok Sabha polls for 89 seats across seven states–Gujarat (26 seats), Andhra Pradesh (17 seats), Uttar Pradesh (14 seats), Punjab (13 seats), West Bengal (9 seats), Bihar (7 seats), Jammu & Kashmir (1 seat) and two union territories–Dadra & Nagar Haveli (1 seat) and Daman & Diu (1 seat). Polling also for 119 Assembly seats in Andhra Pradesh and by-elections for seven Assembly seats in Gujarat, two in Uttar Pradesh and one each in Bihar and West Bengal.

May 07: Phase 8 voting of Lok Sabha poll to cover 64 seats in seven states–Andhra Pradesh (25 seats), Uttar Pradesh (15 seats), Bihar (7 seats), West Bengal (6 seats), Uttarakhand (5 seats), Himachal  Pradesh (4 seats), Jammu & Kashmir (2 seats). Also, polling for 175 Assembly  seats in Andhra Pradesh, by-elections for two Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh and one each in Bihar and West Bengal.

May 12: Phase 9 voting of Lok Sabha polls to cover 41 seats across three states –Uttar Pradesh (18 seats), West Bengal (17 seats), Bihar (6 seats). Also, by-election for two Assembly seats in West Bengal.
