Custody of Manoj Kumar was necessary as he needs to be questioned on many cases of cheating and his unaccounted money
Kolkata : Former Enforcement Directorate (ED) assistant director Manoj Kumar was remanded in 10-day police custody by Bankshall Court on Wednesday after he surrendered before it.
Kumar was the chief investigating officer for ED in the Rose Valley chit fund case. Manoj Kumar who is accused of extortion and cheating appeared before the court of Debabrata Saha along with his counsels and surrendered in accordance with the April 17 Supreme Court order.
After hearing both parties, Debabrata Saha ordered for 10 days police remand of Kumar.
Earlier in the third week of March, Kumar had appealed for anticipatory bail with the Calcutta High Court which was rejected. Kumar then moved the apex court which too rejected his bail plea.
The case pertains to a complaint filed by Komal Somani, a chartered accountant, with the Shakespeare Sarani Police station alleging that Kumar led an ED raid against him in 2016. Later, a man allegedly extorted Rs 40 lakh from him in connection with the raid.
During the hearing, the government prosecutor prayed that custody of the accused was necessary as Kumar needs to be questioned on many cases of cheating and his illegal unaccounted money kept in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. The government pleader also alleged that Kumar used to run a racket with his associates by misusing his government position and extorted huge amounts.
Kumar was suspended by the ED authorities after he was found to be close with Subhra Kundu, wife of Rose Valley group chairman Goutam Kundu, a few months back.
