Jaipur: Robert Vadra, the husband of the AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi and brother-in-law of the Congress president Rahul Gandhi, was grilled for more than eight hours by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) here on Tuesday.  The ED is likely to continue the interrogation on Wednesday also. Vadra’s mother Maureen Vadra has also been interrogated for an hour and the officials allowed her to go after the questioning.

Earlier in the morning Priynaka Gandhi, who flew in from Lucknow to be with her husband on Monday night, dropped him and her mother-in-law at the ED’s office and flew back to Lucknow. This was Vadra’s first appearance before the ED in Jaipur in connection with charges of money laundering through land deals made by a company linked to him. Vadra was asked by the Rajasthan High Court to cooperate with the agency.

His Jaipur appearance follows soon after he faced ED questioning for three days in Delhi on charges of money laundering, allegedly through property purchased in London. Vadra is also facing charges of irregular land deals in Haryana’s Gurugram district. Vadra was permitted to leave around 1.30 pm for an hour-long lunch break.

Near the ED office, some Congress workers shouted slogans in support of Priyanka Gandhi, and also repeated the slogan given by her brother Rahul Gandhi, calling Modi a ‘thief’. (Inputs from agencies) “Chowkidar chor hai,” they shouted. Several hoardings were put up nearby showing pictures of Priyanka Gandhi and her husband Robert Vadra, and saying the people wanted Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi to come to power.

The emotional tweet
“So here we are, my 75-year-old mother n me in Jaipur to depose in front of the Enforcement Directorate. Not understanding the lows of this vindictive government to be harassing a senior citizen. Since I have already been interrogated for 3 days in Delhi headquarters of the Enforcement Directorate.

If there was any issue or any illegality, which was found by government, why did it take them 4 years n 8 months, to call me a month before campaigning begins for the General elections. Do they think people in India do not view it as an election gimmick?

As I always have adhered to rules and overall being a disciplined person, I will answer every question with respect n dignity. This too shall pass and will make me stronger. What goes around comes around. God is with us!!”
