New Delhi

Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi and party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had a sneak view of Congress panel’s 3-hour-long discussions with Punjab CM Capt Amarinder Singh, 79, at the Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Road party office in Delhi by joining it with video-conferencing, but they did not pose any questions that may disrupt the proceedings.

Amarinder, who had come with a load of files suspected to be dossiers on the detractor MLAs opposing him, performance of every Congress MLA and their business interests, remained receptive to suggestions and answered all queries posed by Rajya Sabha Opposition leader Mallikarjun Kharge, 78, as the chairman of the panel on the basis of its interviews with the firebrand rebel leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, 57, the party MLAs as also the president and former presidents of the state Congress. Two other members of the panel are: AICC general secretary in-charge of Punjab Harish Rawat, 73, a former Uttarakhand CM, and former Delhi MP Jai Prakash Aggarwal, 76.

Rawat said the Congress President told the panel while appointing its members the next Punjab election will be contested only under the leadership of Amarinder and they should, therefore, explore how the party puts up a united face in the months before the election.

The CM, however, refused to disclose what transpired in the meeting when confronted by the media, saying they were internal discussions not meant for the press as “we were discussing preparations for the Assembly poll due to be held in six months.”

Insiders say he sternly opposed the suggestion by the panel to accommodate Sidhu and a Dalit leader as dy CMs to ensure the party does not go to poll as a divided house. He said he had already rejected this suggestion by Rahul months ago and it should not be repeated.
