New Delhi: Finding no alternative even after a month of his resignation as the Congress President in the Congress Working Committee (CWC) to own up the Lok Sabha poll defeat, Rahul Gandhi has reconciled not to let the party keep drifting rudderless when the Assembly polls are due in four or five states in coming months.

He has called a meeting of leaders and general secretaries in-charge of the poll-bound states of Maharashtra, Haryana, Jharkhand, Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir here on Thursday to kick-start the poll preparations.

Elections are due in Maharashtra, Haryana and Jharkhand in another three months while Delhi has to go to polls in January and the Assembly polls in J&K are also expected in September-October.

When told that no preparations to face these elections will cause further blow to the Congress, Rahul readily agreed to take the matters in his hand and hold the meetings.

Some leaders see this as a positive sign since Rahul has been otherwise extremely rigid all this while, refusing to even meet senior leaders to discuss the leadership issue.

Since he has been pressing all this time for the party to elect a new president, his decision to hold the meetings as the party president has made the seniors happy that the Congress won’t continue to be a headless party.

A small group of senior leaders have discussed various options among themselves as also with Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, but they failed to reach any conclusion.

There are now murmurs in the party that Rahul may convene a CWC meeting after holding meetings with the leaders from the poll-bound states, but nobody would confirm it.

The party leaders say the CWC may limit itself to discuss the upcoming elections since Rahul won’t even participate if it has to discuss creation of a new leadership structure and choose the new party president.
