Patna: Congress appeared to be revitalised in Bihar after a gap of 30 years as it organised a massive rally on its own resources and manpower on Sunday at historic Gandhi Maidan. Congress president, Rahul Gandhi presented three Congress chief ministers – Madhya Pradesh CM Kamal Nath, Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot and Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Vaghel – as victory models of the Congress and said they were the symbols of the government which fulfilled commitments made to the electorate during the campaign and said they waived off loans to the farmers within 24 hours of taking over as chief ministers.

Kamal Nath did it within 15 minutes, Rahul said and added they were different from the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, who make only promises and never fulfill them. Narendra Modi had addressed his first election meeting at Gandhi Maidan in October 2013 as BJP’s PM candidate and had promised Rs 15 lakhs in the accounts of every citizen following recovery of black money.

The Congress workers had come from different parts of the state to attend the rally, first of its kind since 1989. Rahul’s father, Rajiv Gandhi had addressed the last rally of the Congress in 1989 here. Rajiv Gandhi was then prime minister and Congress president. Satyendra Narayan Singh of Congress was the chief minister on Bihar. Since 1990, Congress is out power in the state.

Lalu Prasad Yadav, who kept the Congress in Bihar under his thumbs and even distributed tickets on behalf of the Congress in elections, used to decide the choice of the state Congress presidents, which denied Congress its due place in Bihar politics. Even the AICC general secretary in-charge for Bihar, RK Dhawan, followed the dictates of Lalu. However, on Sunday, his son and leader of Opposition in Bihar assembly, Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, projected Rahul Gandhi as the next prime minister of India.

Yadav said “I have talked to all the leaders of different parties, I am convinced Rahul Gandhi is most suitable to occupy the office of the Prime Minister.” He requested Rahul Gandhi to grant special status to Bihar immediately after becoming the PM and recalled Narendra Modi had made the promise in his election campaign to grant special status to Bihar in 2013-14.

Rahul Gandhi did not make any commitment on special status in his hour long speech, but promised central university status to Patna University immediately if Congress assumes power at the Centre. He received tremendous applause from the youths on his promise. This was in sharp contrast to PM Modi, who, while addressing the centenary celebrations of Patna University at Science College grounds here, had rejected the demand of CM Nitish Kumar to grant special sgtatus to Patna University.

Rahul reiterated his charges against PM Modi on Rafael deal and his alleged unkept promise of unearthing black money.
He also gave a veiled threat to the RJD in Bihar on seat sharing for the Lok Sabha elections by saying “Nowhere the Congress will play as second fiddle, we will fight on the front foot”.m Rahul profously thanked the Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee for organising “historic and massive rally.”
