New Delhi: Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday took a jibe at Congress President Rahul Gandhi saying his credibility has taken beating and she feels sorry that “the president of a national party like Congress depends on falsehood.”
At a press conference at the BJP headquarters here, she harped on the reply filed by Rahul in the Supreme Court on a contempt petition by BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi, to claim that his credibility is lost since he had been repeatedly speaking lies.

She ridiculed Rahul perhaps without an access to his lengthy reply that would have turned her face red as he has rather reiterated at length his charge of the Rafale scam on PM Modi while stating he agrees that “no court would ever say Chowkidar Chor Hai.” Sitharaman said: “His credibility has taken a beating. People in public life to generously go on saying untruth & to repeat it is a matter of grief. I feel sorry that President of a national party like Congress depends only on falsehood.”
A quick repartee came from Congress chief spokesman Randeep Singh Surjewala, who is also a lawyer, on Twitter, telling her: “Issue is sub-judice. Stop passing verdict today.” He even threatened to drag the minister to court for a “criminal contempt.” In the same tweet, he said: “BJP’s blasphemous misrepresentation of Rahulji”s reply to the SC is itself a criminal contempt of court proceedings.”
