New Delhi: Congress President Rahul Gandhi remains adamant to resign from the post, ignoring the Congress Working Committee (CWC) expressing full confidence in him and rejecting his offer to step down. The 48-year old Rahul insisted even after the CWC meeting that he would like to exit as its top boss he assumed some 20 months ago from his mother Sonia Gandhi, who sitting next to him kept pursuing him not to rock the party”s boat in this hour of crisis. The party sources said both Sonia and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra finally took the stand in the CWC meeting that it is up to Rahul if he so feels so bad for the drubbing the Congress got in the polls despite all his efforts.
A CWC member on condition of anonymity said Rahul even stressed if someone outside the Gandhi family takes the party”s reigns. He was quoting saying: “We have to continue our fight. I am and will remain a disciplined soldier of the Congress and continue to fight fearlessly. But I do not want to remain the party president. It is not necessary that the president should be from Gandhi family.” Even as the party leaders stressed at a Press conference that Rahul has been authorised for a complete overhaul of the party at every level as his resignation has been rejected, Rahul left the CWC meeting without saying a word and did not response to reporters trying to corner him. His sister Priyanka Gandhi, an AICC general secretary, was persuading him along with their mother Sonia Gandhi since Thursday, but she changed tune to state that the final decision rests with Rahul and she would not intervene.
