New Delhi : The Congress leadership is contemplating to declare Rahul Gandhi as the party’s prime ministerial candidate in the coming days, possibly before the one-day AICC session to be held at the Talkatora Stadium here on Jan 17.
A view emerged among the senior leaders that the declaration should be avoided in the AICC session lest it washes out the resolutions the party will be adopting to send out a message to the people in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections.
A section of the party seniors have dropped their initial objection to name Rahul as the PM candidate at a time when the atmosphere is against the Congress with very remote prospects of its returning to power. They were persuaded that the Congress will get the people’s support if Rahul is seen leading it from the front.
According to sources everyone is craving for making him the PM candidate and hence the announcement may be made along with the proposed changes in the AICC team to reduce the responsibility of many general secretaries and secretaries to enable them to concentrate on contesting the Lok Sabha elections.
Name of Rahul has been already doing the rounds for becoming the PM candidate, but it became an urgency after PM Manmohan Singh on Friday announced to hand over the baton. Immediately after his press conference, I&B Minister Manish Tewari and party general secretary Janardan Dwivedi batted for Rahul to be the candidate.
While Tewari hailed him as a ‘natural leader’ of the party, Dwivedi went a step further that Rahul is the party’s ‘supreme leader’ after Sonia.
Meanwhile, Rahul has completed his interaction with the AICC office-bearers to take their view on whether they would like to be relieved from the posts to contest the Lok Sabha elections as they may not be able to devote enough time for the party work if they enter the fray.
