At least 37 CRPF personnel were killed yesterday in one of the deadliest terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir when a Jaish suicide bomber rammed a vehicle carrying over 100 kg of explosives into their bus in Pulwama district. New Delhi: The Pulwama terror jigsaw is falling in place. Sources in CRPF say around 60 kg of powerful RDX was detonated in one of the worst attacks in decades and not 350 kg, as the initial reports had suggested. Also, it appears that the RDX was brought into Valley in small doses over a period of time. Incidentally, it was laden in a sedan, not an SUV.

The bomber didn’t ram the bus but detonated the explosives right next to it, after overtaking the convoy of 78 buses from the left. Such was the impact of the explosion that a body was flung 80 metres away. Sources told NDTV that the explosives had a “shaped charge” designed for focused impact and meant for penetrating armour. No wonder, the bus was blown to bits and reduced to a mangled heap.

Efforts are on to find who else was involved in the attack. Police and CRPF personnel say this could not have been a one-man operation. It is not clear how Dar, a 22-year-old school dropout who stayed just 10 km from the blast site, managed to get hold of the RDX and who helped him. Other questions remain: How did he manage to access the highway which had been sanitised hours before for the CRPF convoy was to pass that way.
