Jaipur: Whenever the chips are down for Rahul Gandhi, invariably Priyanka Vadra’s name pops up as a ‘saviour’ who could infuse renewed vigour in the party.
The name is picked up in no time by a salivating media starved of news about the Congress conclaves, which seldom have a dramatic outcome.
As is often the case – some would say the moves are ‘scripted’ -- there was a clamour on the sidelines of the party ‘Shivir’ for Rahul taking over as party president. Just as the decibel level was going up, along came the call for Priyanka from a nondescript quarter to take up the mantle of leadership.
‘‘Priyanka Gandhi Vadra should take over as the Congress president if Rahul Gandhi is unwilling to lead, as she is the most popular face of the party,’’ said Congress leader Acharya Pramod Krishnam while talking to mediapersons.
It took the Congress-savvy correspondents some time to trace the antecedents of Pramod Acharya. It was revealed that he hails from UP and is a religious leader of sorts who runs a mutt.
While Congressmen of all hues come out of the woodwork at party conclaves, Pramod stole a march over other Priyanka loyalists by bringing up the subject of an alternative leader in the presence of Sonia Gandhi at the Udaipur Chintan Shiver. This was followed by the ‘name dropping’ at the press meet.
Interestingly, Pramod also said there was dire need to embrace Hindutva to win over the alienated voters. He also demanded that the younger generation should be allowed to lead the party from the front and said that Sachin Pilot should be promoted in Rajasthan, which goes to Assembly polls next year.
At the end, some political observers were left wondering whether Pramod was rendering a service to his ‘leader Priyanka’ or setting a cat among pigeons, a move that may please a section that likes to play the siblings against each other.
