New Delhi: Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan has expressed shock and dismay over the reported move to appoint former Supreme Court judge PC Ghose as the first Lokpal. He called Justice Ghose as an unlikely choice for the post since questions had been raised in the past about his elevation to the Supreme Court.
Talking to FPJ, Bhushan said on Sunday evening that he had requested CJI Ranjan Gogoi to direct the selection committee to make the names of all shortlisted candidates public. “I was assured that this will be done but the names or choices before the selection panel were never put in public domain until now, when we hear that Justice Ghose is likely to become Lokpal.
Had I come to know about this I would have moved an objection since Justice Ghose was brought to the Supreme Court bench overlooking the seniority of Justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya and two other High Court judges who too were senior to Justice Ghose.’’
Bhushan recalled that after being ignored, despite being Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court and adequately senior, Justice Bhattacharya wrote a strongly worded letter to President pointing out that Ghose was elevated to the Supreme Court because he had recommended the appointment of the then Chief Justice Altamas Kabir’s sister, Justice Shukla Kabir Sinha, to the bench of Calcutta High Court.
Justice Bhattacharya who too was on the collegium had opposed the elevation of Chief Justice of India’s sister since she had hardly done any significant legal practice and, thus, could hardly be taken as deserving, Bhushan pointed out.
