Kolkata: The venue was PM Modi’s rally at Brigade Parade Ground. For once, the area was awash with saffron — flags, buntings, Modi masks all around.

Firing on all cylinders – almost reminiscent of Mamata Banerjee – PM Modi accused both the Congress and the TMC of “perpetuating family rule”. “In 55 years, during which period a family ruled India, it stifled the talent of young people and spread the poison of casteism. There is a replay in West Bengal now, where the aunt (Mamata Banerjee) and nephew (party MP Abhishek Banerjee) are looting people,” he alleged.

Earlier, at another rally, he called Banerjee a “speedbreaker” in the path of West Bengal’s development. “I have not been able to ensure the development of Bengal with the same speed as elsewhere in the country. The reason for this is that in Bengal there is a speedbreaker, and this speedbreaker is known as Didi,” Modi said, attacking the chief minister.

He alleged that Banerjee had put hurdles in the way of implementation of the Centre’s welfare schemes like Ayushman Bharat Yojana, PM Kisan Samman Yojana and the Real Estate Regulatory Authority Act (RERA). “Didi wants to perpetuate poverty so that her politics of poverty may flourish. I want to eradicate it but Didi, like the Congress and the Left, thinks if poverty is weeded out, how they will run their politics,” he said.

Mamata, not the one to take things lying down, tweaked her schedule to speak after PM Modi. Around 4 in the evening, as the Prime Minister finished speaking in Kolkata, she took the stage in Cooch Behar. Dubbing the Prime Minister “expiry babu”, she reiterated her challenge for a US Presidential-style televised debate.

“You worry about Delhi first and then turn your eyes towards Bengal,” said the Chief Minister, accusing PM Modi of making false claims about performance of her government in the state. “I am not Modi, I don’t tell lies,” she declared. Accusing the BJP of doing nothing, she said 12,000 farmers had committed suicide over the last five years.

Claiming that her government has done much for the welfare of the people, the Chief Minister said the income of farmers in Bengal has tripled under her rule. The PM targeted the Congress as well, saying its “dhakosla” manifesto will expire on May 23 (the date of the Lok Sabha election results) and accused the opposition party of speaking the language of Pakistan, as it has promised to dilute AFSPA in terror-affected areas.

Accusing the Congress of repeatedly bowing its head before terrorism, Modi alleged that opposition leaders like Banerjee and Gandhi were insulting the country and its forces in their quest to demean him. This chowkidar (Modi) of yours is standing as a great wall between national security and the Congress’s ploys,” he said and appealed to the people to re-elect the BJP for creating a “new India”.
