Mumbai : The Central Bureau of Investigation has finally taken the investigation against media baron Peter Mukherjea to its logical conclusion by charging him with murder of his step daughter Sheena Bora. The agency on Tuesday filed in the Special CBI court of Additional Metropolitan Magistrate R V Adone a supplementary chargesheet, naming Mukherjea as a murder accused.
The charge sheet states that the seeds of the murder are embedded in the attempts by Peter Mukherjae and his wife Indrani to separate Sheena and Rahul, who were live-in partners. When the attempts proved unsuccessful, the duo planned to kill Sheena, Indrani’s daughter from a previous marriage.
Peter was in London at the time of the murder: this, the CBI believes, was an elaborate charade to create an overseas alibi for the media magnate. The agency has in its possession call data records which show that Peter spoke to Indrani on April 24 – the day of the murder — at around 12:24 PM for 1329 seconds and again at 1:36 PM for 242 seconds and that they exchanged messages as well. Indrani again spoke to Peter for 924 seconds after Sheena’s body was disposed of the next day.
Peter had told his son Rahul that Sheena was safe and alive in the US. This disclosure by Rahul was the trigger for the investigation into the media baron’s role in step-daughter Sheena’s killing.
Sheena (24) was allegedly strangled in a car by Indrani on April 24, 2012; her body was later burnt and dumped in a forest in the adjoining Raigad district. Indrani’s ex-husband Sanjeev khanna and her driver were accomplices in the murder and destruction of evidence.
Though the murder was committed in 2012, the matter came out in the public domain in August 2015 after which the role of the other three accused — Indrani, Khanna and driver Shyamvar Rai – was known. Peter was arrested later on November 2015.
Peter was in CBI custody for about two weeks before he was shifted to judicial remand, and is currently lodged at Arthur Road Jail; prime accused Indrani is lodged at Byculla Women’s Jail.
The CBI has been investigating various angles in this case, including the financial transactions that took place after the sale of INX Media by the Mukherjeas.
